Scholarship for Central Asian University Students in Turkey

The Nippon Foundation (hereinafter referred to as “TNF”) and the Japan Turkey Central Asia Friendship Association (hereinafter referred to as “JATCAFA”) offer scholarships to students from Central Asian who study at universities in Turkey under the TNF & JATCAFA Scholarship Program as follows:

 

1. Objectives


Human resource projects undertaken with developing countries form one of the most important focal points of the activities of TNF. As an NGO based in Asia, TNF is keen to assist the development of Central Asian countries that joined the Asian community after the collapse of the former Soviet Union . The Scholarship aims to nurture excellent students from Central Asia , who are studying in Turkey , so that they may contribute to the long-term development of their own countries. With this is mind, TNF, in cooperation with JATCAFA, which is based in Turkey, selects students who display the potential to become the next generation of leaders in their respective fields in their home countries. TNF and JATCAFA strongly expect the recipients of the Scholarship to gain as much as they can from their studies in Turkey . After the scholarship recipients’ studies have been completed, they are expected to return to their home countries and maintain, over the course of their lives, the network established during their stay in Turkey through the activities of TNF, JATCAFA and Alumni associations.

2. Eligibility

  1. The applicants must be nationals of one of the following countries: Azerbaijan , Kazakhstan , Kyrgyzstan , Tajikistan or Turkmenistan.
  2. The applicants must be either 3rd year faculty students of universtiy, 1st year master students or doctora students who used to be scholarship recepients of JATCAFA in Turkey at the time of applying for this program.
  3. The applicants must have 2.5 - 3.00 or higher GPA for the previous acedemic year.
  4. The applicants must attend the interview on the designated date and at the designated place.
  5. The applicants must have a basic knowledge of English in order to attend the proposed cultural activities organized by JATCAFA.

3. Scholarship Benefits

  1. Monthly allowance: 100USD per month for faculty students, 350Euro per month for master students and 350Euro per month for doctora students will be given to each recipient during the term of his/her scholarship.
  2. As for the recipients who have been receiving the scholarships will keep the same amount.
4. Renewal of Scholarship Period

If the recipient maintains a good level of performance that is in accordance with the selection concept and policies of TNF and JATCAFA, we will support him/her until the completion of his/her term of study. However, please bear in mind the Scholarships will be renewed each year according to judgment of TNF and JATCAFA, for a period of up to three years.
5. JATCAFA Cultural Activities

Various cultural activities will be sponsored to provide the recipients the opportunity to interact during and after their scholarship period. Participation in some of the activities is obligatory for the recipients. The activities are as follows:
  1. Scholarship award ceremony (held once per year) – obligatory
  2. Lectures regarding Japanese business, culture and history by invited lecturers from Japan (held once per year) – obligatory
  3. Japanese language and economy lectures (held for two semesters per year) – not obligatory
  4. Other lectures regarding Japanese culture and history by domestic lecturers (occasional) – not obligatory
  5. Cultural and recreational excursion tours in Turkey (occasional) – not obligatory
  6. A New Year party (held once per year) – not obligatory
6. Recruitment and Selection of Scholarships


The deadline for applications for the Scholarship for the year 2009-2010 will be 5 October 2009 .

The selection process for scholarship is divided into two stages. An initial selection will be carried out by JATCAFA, and then a final selection will be made by the Selection Committee of TNF and JATCAFA. Certain amount will be chosen from Istanbul and Ankara via this process. The results of the final selection will be announced by the middle of November 2009.

7. The Nippon Foundation


The Nippon Foundation is an independent, non-profit, grant-making organization that was founded in 1962. It supports projects both in Japan and overseas. It funds activities in three areas: social welfare and volunteer support, maritime research and development, and overseas cooperative assistance. It works along side other non-profit organizations, non-governmental organizations, and international organizations.

8. Japan Turkey Central Asia Friendship Association


The Japan Turkey Central Asia Friendship Association is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that was founded in Istanbul , Turkey in 2004 with the support of The Nippon Foundation. It provides scholarships to Central Asian university students in Turkey so that they may contribute to the development of their home countries. The main purpose of the program is to build a firm network between the students, TNF and JATCAFA, and most importantly, between their home countries and Japan through various cultural activities.

9. Application Information

Applicants must submit the following documents to JATCAFA by 5th October 2009 . The documents submitted will not be returned.

  1. A completed application form.
    The application form can be downloaded from the JATCAFA Web site (http://www.jatcafa.org). The application form must be completed and sent electronically to JATCAFA Istanbul office.
  2. A one-page essay A4 in size about “The future of my home country” (in English only).
    The essay must be sent electronically as an attached Microsoft Word file along with the above mentioned application form to JATCAFA Istanbul office.
  3. Original academic record of the second year at the attended university for faculty students.
    The applicants must bring the original transcript to the first interview.
  4. Three passport-size photographs taken within the past six months.
    The applicants must bring these to the first interview.
